Victoria Falls Safari Budget Guide

Victoria Falls entrance $50/adult (Zimbabwe side). Budget hostels from $15-40/night. Mid-range hotels $80-250/night. Luxury lodges (Victoria Falls Hotel, Matetsi) $300-2,000/night. Activities: bungee jump $160, helicopter flight $175, white-water rafting $150, sunset cruise $60.

Getting to Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls Airport (VFA) has direct flights from Johannesburg (2hrs), Nairobi, and Addis Ababa. The town is 20 minutes from the airport. The falls are a 15-minute walk from town. Zambia's Livingstone is just across the Victoria Falls Bridge (visa required for border crossing).

Victoria Falls is one of those rare natural phenomena that genuinely exceeds expectations. The local Kololo name Mosi-oa-Tunya — "The Smoke That Thunders" — perfectly captures the experience: long before you see the falls, you hear their roar and feel the spray on your skin. When the Zambezi is in full flood, the curtain of water stretching 1.7 kilometres across the gorge generates a spray cloud that soaks visitors to the skin and rises hundreds of metres into the air.

The Zimbabwe side offers the best vantage points, with a series of viewpoints along the gorge rim connected by a rainforest path. Each viewpoint reveals a different perspective — from the roaring Main Falls to the Eastern Cataract with its perpetual rainbow. During lower water months (September-December), the Zambian side offers Devil's Pool, a natural infinity pool on the very edge of the falls.

Beyond the falls, Victoria Falls town has become southern Africa's adventure capital. Bungee jumping from the 111-metre bridge, white-water rafting through the Batoka Gorge (considered among the world's best rapids), helicopter flights, zip-lining, and Zambezi sunset cruises create a packed activity calendar.
