Safari Gear Tips from Experience

Gear mistakes are expensive to fix in the bush. These tips come from guides and repeat safari travellers who have learned what actually matters.

Choose 8x42 binoculars for general safari, 10x42 for open plains

8x magnification provides a wider field of view and steadier image without a tripod -- better for forest environments and tracking moving animals. 10x is superior on open savannahs like the Serengeti and Masai Mara where subjects are distant. If you can only buy one pair, 10x42 is the more versatile choice.

Rent telephoto lenses instead of buying

A 200-600mm lens costs $1,500-$2,000 to buy but $150-$250 per week to rent from services like LensRentals or BorrowLenses. Unless you shoot wildlife regularly, renting is dramatically better value. Book 2-3 weeks ahead during peak safari season (July-October).

Pack a bean bag, not a tripod

Tripods are useless in a game drive vehicle. A bean bag (empty canvas bag you fill with rice or dried beans at your lodge) drapes over the vehicle door and gives rock-solid lens support. Cost: under $20. Bring a second for the windowsill on the other side.

Layer for temperature swings of 20+ degrees Celsius

Pre-dawn game drives in open vehicles at 5:30am can be 5-10 degrees Celsius, even in tropical Africa. By 10am it is 30+ degrees. You need a system: merino base layer, fleece mid-layer, windproof outer. Strip layers into a daypack as the sun rises.

Use a soft duffel, never a hard suitcase

Bush plane luggage holds are small and irregularly shaped. Hard suitcases physically do not fit. Airlines like SafariLink, Coastal Aviation, and Air Kenya enforce 15-20kg limits including hand luggage. A soft duffel compresses to fill available space. This is non-negotiable for fly-in safaris.

Bring twice as many memory cards as you think you need

A single leopard hunt can fill 16GB in 15 minutes of burst shooting. Bring at least 256GB total capacity. Use two smaller cards (128GB each) rather than one large card -- if a card fails, you only lose half your photos. Back up daily to a portable drive.

Khaki is not a fashion choice -- it is functional

Bright colours attract tsetse flies (blue is worst), spook animals on walking safaris, and stand out in photographs. Neutral colours -- khaki, olive, tan, grey -- are cooler in heat, blend with the environment, and are genuinely more comfortable. White attracts dust and stains instantly.

Test all gear before you leave home

Charge every battery, format every memory card, test your binocular focus mechanism, and do a full dress rehearsal with your clothing layers. Discovering a dead battery or stiff focus wheel on your first game drive wastes irreplaceable time.
