The Safari

Great Migration: 2+ million wildebeest and zebra on the move

Over two million wildebeest, half a million zebra and hundreds of thousands of gazelle: the Great Migration is the largest overland movement of mammals on Earth, and this 7-day luxury safari puts you at its heart. Begin in Arusha, then descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for the Big Five in one of the world's most concentrated wildlife arenas. Continue to the Serengeti, where your guide tracks the herds by season: Mara River crossings with crocodile ambushes from June to October, or the southern calving grounds with 8,000 births a day from December to March. Luxury tented camps move with the herds so you are always in the right place, and between the mega-herds the Serengeti delivers Africa's finest predator action: lion prides, cheetah coalitions, leopards in sausage trees and hyena clans. Optional dawn hot air balloon safari available.

Ngorongoro Crater, Big Five in a Volcanic Arena

After breakfast, drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and descend 600 metres into the crater, a natural volcanic amphitheatre spanning 260 square kilometres and home to around 25,000 animals. The crater floor supports the densest concentration of wildlife in Africa: lion prides, black rhino, elephant, buffalo and hippo pools. Spot flamingos on Lake Magadi and watch hyena clans at their den. After a full day of game driving with a packed gourmet lunch on the crater floor, ascend to your lodge on the rim for sundowners.

Day 3

Transfer to the Serengeti, Endless Plains

Depart the Ngorongoro area and drive through the Serengeti's southern gate. The landscape shifts from highland forest to the vast golden savannahs that gave the Serengeti its name, 'siringet' in the Maasai language, the place where the land runs on forever. Game drive en route, watching for cheetah on the open plains, secretary birds striding through the grass and the first distant herds of the migration. Arrive at your luxury tented camp in time for an afternoon game drive.

Day 4

Serengeti, Full Day Migration Tracking

A full day dedicated to the Great Migration. Depart at dawn when predators are most active, as lions return from the night hunt and cheetahs begin to stalk. Your guide uses radio contact with other drivers and spotter planes to position you in the path of the herds. Depending on the season you may witness dramatic river crossings where thousands of wildebeest plunge into crocodile-filled waters, or the calving grounds where 8,000 calves are born every day. Gourmet bush lunch under an acacia tree, afternoon drives until sunset and a starlit dinner back at camp.

Day 5

Serengeti, Predators, Plains and Optional Balloon

Optional dawn hot air balloon safari over the Serengeti ($550 pp): drift silently above the migration herds as the sun paints the plains amber and gold, followed by a champagne breakfast in the bush. If staying on the ground, a dawn game drive focuses on the Serengeti's world-class predators. Today's drives explore rocky kopjes where lion prides rest in the shade, riverine forest where leopards drape across branches, and open plains where cheetah coalitions hunt. Late afternoon, visit a Maasai boma to learn about the pastoralist culture that coexists with the wildlife.

Day 6

Serengeti, Final Game Drives and Sunset Farewell

Your last full day in the Serengeti. A dawn game drive targets any species still on your wish list, with your guide drawing on all their local knowledge. Mid-morning, return to camp for brunch and a few hours of relaxation, perhaps a swim in the camp pool while warthogs graze nearby. The afternoon drive is your farewell to the Serengeti: a long, slow cruise through the golden grass as the sun drops and the animals emerge for their evening routines. Finish with sundowners overlooking the plains and a final bush dinner under the stars.
