The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is one of the largest protected wilderness areas on Earth, a 52,000 square kilometre expanse of semi-arid savanna, ancient river valleys, and salt pans that stretches across the heart of Botswana. This is raw, uncompromising Africa — vast, empty, and extraordinarily beautiful.
The reserve's Deception Valley and its surrounding fossil river system is the prime game viewing area. During the green season, when rains trigger an explosion of grass, massive herds of springbok, gemsbok, and hartebeest attract the Kalahari's famous black-maned lions — among the most photogenic big cats in Africa. Brown hyenas, cheetahs, and bat-eared foxes also thrive in this semi-arid ecosystem.
The Central Kalahari holds deep cultural significance as the ancestral homeland of the San Bushmen, whose intimate knowledge of this harsh landscape is the product of tens of thousands of years of continuous habitation.
