July and August are generally the best months for most African safari destinations. This is the heart of the dry season in East and Southern Africa — vegetation is sparse, animals gather at water sources, and visibility is excellent. The Great Wildebeest Migration river crossings happen in Kenya's Masai Mara, and Botswana's Okavango Delta is at peak flood.

Yes — and it has real advantages. The wet season (roughly November–April in East Africa) brings lush green landscapes, fewer crowds, and lower prices. Calving season (January–February in Kenya and Tanzania) draws predators and offers spectacular wildlife action. Bird life is also at its most diverse. Tracks can be muddy and some camps close, but many travellers prefer the green season atmosphere.

The Migration is a year-round cycle. The most dramatic river crossings happen July–October in Kenya's Masai Mara. From January–March, the herds are in Tanzania's southern Serengeti for calving season — another extraordinary wildlife event. The herds then travel north through the Serengeti (April–June) before reaching the Mara. There is no single "best" moment — each phase offers unique experiences.

Mountain gorilla trekking is possible year-round, but the dry seasons (June–September and December–February) are preferred. Trails are less muddy, treks are physically easier, and photos are clearer. The long dry season June–September is considered the prime window. Permits must be booked months in advance regardless of season.

October–November can be very hot and dry in Southern Africa (Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana) with temperatures exceeding 40°C. Game viewing is still excellent as animals are forced to waterholes, but midday game drives are uncomfortable. In East Africa, temperatures are more moderate year-round due to altitude. Choosing an air-conditioned vehicle or scheduling drives for early morning and late afternoon makes hot months manageable.

Kenya and Tanzania offer the most accessible introduction to safari — excellent infrastructure, well-established parks, and diverse wildlife. The Masai Mara (Kenya) and Serengeti (Tanzania) are iconic for good reason. South Africa's Kruger National Park is also excellent for first-timers, with malaria-free options in private reserves like Madikwe. For something more unique, Botswana's Okavango Delta offers a water-based safari experience unlike anywhere else.
