Safari Experiences
Land directly at remote wilderness camps. No overland hours. No rough roads. Just the plane door opening onto the bush.
Most bush charters use Cessna 208 Caravans (9 seats) or Cessna 182s (3–4 seats). Flights are low altitude (500–2,000ft) — spectacular views over the landscape. No security queues, no terminals — you board from a grass strip.
Many are gravel or grass strips inside national parks. The camp vehicle meets the plane on landing. Guests are transferred directly to camp — sometimes within sight of wildlife from the moment they land.
Scheduled air safaris link fixed hubs on set times (more affordable). Private charters fly on your timetable (more flexible, higher cost). Many all-inclusive camps include scheduled transfers in their published rates.
The flight itself is part of the safari. Flying over the Okavango Delta at dawn, or across the Serengeti watching wildebeest below, is a memory in its own right. Many photographers consider it as valuable as the game drives.
Hubs: Maun, Kasane
Camps: Okavango Delta, Moremi, Chobe, Linyanti
No overland routes to Chief's Island or remote Delta camps — fly-in is mandatory. A 3-camp Botswana circuit covers Okavango, Moremi, and Chobe in 9 days with 2 short flights.
Hubs: Lusaka, Mfuwe (South Luangwa)
Camps: South Luangwa, Lower Zambezi, Kafue, Busanga Plains
Parks are separated by 5–8 hours of rough road. A fly-in circuit Lusaka → Lower Zambezi → Kafue → South Luangwa is achievable in 10 days; overland would take 14.
Hubs: Arusha, Kilimanjaro
Camps: Serengeti (all zones), Ngorongoro, Lake Manyara, Ruaha
Serengeti alone spans 14,763 km². Flying between zones (Ndutu, Seronera, Lamai) follows the Migration. Overland between Ndutu and Lamai takes a full day each way.
Hubs: Dar es Salaam
Camps: Nyerere (Selous), Ruaha, Mahale (chimpanzees)
Ruaha is 8–10 hours from Dar by road; by air it's 90 minutes. Mahale Mountains (chimpanzees on Lake Tanganyika) is accessible only by charter plane + boat.
Hubs: Victoria Falls, Harare
Camps: Mana Pools, Gonarezhou, Bazaruto Archipelago
Mana Pools has no sealed road access — fly-in is standard. Bazaruto's islands (Mozambique) require light aircraft from Vilanculos.
Strict weight and size limits apply. Packing correctly is essential — most guests dramatically overpack their first fly-in safari.
