Best Time to Visit Zanzibar Archipelago

June to October and December to February for dry, sunny weather. March to May is the main rainy season. The short rains in November are usually brief afternoon showers.

Zanzibar Archipelago Safari Budget Guide

Budget guesthouses from $30/night. Mid-range beach hotels $100-300/night. Luxury resorts $300-1,500/night. Stone Town is more affordable than beach areas.

Getting to Zanzibar Archipelago

Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) with direct flights from Nairobi, Dar, and some European charters. 20-minute flight or 2-hour ferry from Dar es Salaam. Many safari operators offer seamless Serengeti-to-Zanzibar transfers.

Zanzibar is the quintessential post-safari beach destination — a tropical archipelago of white sand beaches, turquoise waters, and a rich cultural heritage that blends African, Arab, Indian, and European influences. The main island of Unguja (commonly called Zanzibar) has been a crossroads of Indian Ocean trade for over a millennium.

Stone Town, the historic heart of Zanzibar, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of narrow alleys, carved wooden doors, bustling bazaars, and crumbling palaces. Beyond the old town, the island's coastline offers some of the Indian Ocean's finest beaches — from the kite-surfing mecca of Paje to the calm, palm-fringed shores of Nungwi.

Zanzibar is the perfect complement to a Tanzania safari — a few days of beach relaxation, cultural exploration, and world-class seafood after the dust and excitement of the bush.
