Nyerere National Park

Nyerere National Park, renamed in 2019 from the famous Selous Game Reserve, is one of Africa's great wilderness areas. At over 50,000 square kilometres, it's Africa's largest protected area — yet the tourism zone in the north receives only a handful of visitors compared to the Serengeti.

The Rufiji River is the park's lifeline, and boat safaris along its channels offer a unique perspective on African wildlife — hippos, crocodiles, elephants bathing, and an extraordinary diversity of waterbirds. Walking safaris through the miombo woodland are another highlight, offering intimate encounters with the bush. The park supports significant populations of African wild dogs, lions, elephants, and buffalo.
