Mikumi is the only Tanzania national park realistically accessible from Dar es Salaam without an internal flight.
Drive west from Dar es Salaam on the A7 highway (Morogoro Road). Well-paved to Mikumi gate — approximately 283km, 4–5 hours. 2WD/sedan fine for the main road; 4WD for park tracks in rainy season. Many operators offer shared or private transfers from Dar.
Charter flights from Julius Nyerere International Airport (Dar) or from Arusha to Mikumi airstrip — approximately 1 hour. More expensive but saves road time. Good option when combining Mikumi with Nyerere fly-in camps.
Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) fees apply. International visitors: $50–60 per person per day (2025 rates). Entry paid by credit card or USD cash at the gate. Accommodation vouchers not substitutable for gate fees.
June–October. Roads inside the park are unpaved gravel; a 4WD is advisable for park tracks June–October and essential November–May. The main A7 is paved and passable year-round.
Hilltop tented suites; panoramic Mkata views; small and intimate; excellent birding from camp
Hillside overlooking Mkata plain; good value; pool; family-friendly
Inside park boundary; swimming pool; reliable game drive departure point
Outside park gate; clean; family rooms; good base for budget 2-night visit
Basic self-catering chalets inside park; book through Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA)
