Mikumi National Park

Mikumi is the southern circuit's most accessible park — just 4-5 hours from Dar es Salaam on a tarmac road, making it popular for weekend safaris. The Mkata Floodplain at the park's heart resembles a miniature Serengeti, with open grasslands supporting healthy populations of lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, and wildebeest.

While lacking the vast scale of Nyerere or Ruaha, Mikumi offers genuine safari experiences at a fraction of the cost and travel time. It's an excellent option for travellers with limited time or budget, and combines well with the nearby Udzungwa Mountains for hiking and primate viewing.
