Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is one of Africa's most ancient and biologically diverse forests — a primeval tangle of towering trees, dense undergrowth, and misty mountain slopes that has survived since the last Ice Age. It protects approximately 459 mountain gorillas, roughly half the world's total population, making it the single most important location for the survival of this critically endangered species.

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi is a structured experience. Small groups of eight trekkers, accompanied by rangers and trackers, enter the forest each morning to locate one of 12 habituated gorilla families. The trek can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 7 hours depending on where the gorillas have moved overnight. Once found, you spend a precious hour in their company — watching a 200-kilogram silverback tear through bamboo, infants tumbling in play, and mothers nursing their young in complete calm.

The forest is divided into four trekking sectors. Buhoma in the north is the most accessible with the original habituated groups. Ruhija offers higher-altitude trekking. Nkuringo perches on a stunning ridgeline. Rushaga in the south has the most gorilla families and is closest to Rwanda for cross-border itineraries.
