The most profound wildlife encounter on earth — sitting face to face with a mountain gorilla family in ancient rainforest. Bwindi hosts approximately 460 gorillas across 4 sectors, with 20+ habituated families available for trekking.
Mountain gorillas exist in only one place on earth — the Virunga Massif and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, shared between Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC. Bwindi alone holds approximately 460 individuals — nearly half the entire global population of ~1,063. This is not a zoo. These are wild animals in 321 km² of ancient Afromontane rainforest, unchanged for 25,000 years.
The gorilla trekking experience at Bwindi is visceral and humbling. After hours of hiking through dense forest, you suddenly find yourself 7 metres from a 200 kg silverback and his family — watching them forage, nurse their young, and groom each other. The one-hour encounter almost always leaves people speechless.
Rangers introduce the gorilla family, trekking rules, and safety guidelines. Group size maximum 8 people.
Follow trackers who radio ahead. Terrain varies — muddy slopes, dense vegetation, steep descents. Porters available ($15) and strongly recommended.
Stay 7 m from the gorillas, no flash photography, no eating. The hour goes fast — put the camera down occasionally and just watch.
Return by the same route or alternative trail. Rangers present certificate of participation on return to HQ.
Bwindi is divided into four trekking sectors — each with different gorilla families, terrain, and lodge options. When booking permits, you choose a specific sector. Permits are not interchangeable between sectors.
