130,000 elephants converge on the Chobe River in the dry season — the greatest elephant spectacle on earth. Add sunset river cruises, lion prides in Savuti, and proximity to Victoria Falls for a truly extraordinary safari.
Chobe's Chobe Riverfront is the single best place in Africa to see elephants — not ten or twenty, but hundreds simultaneously. In the dry season (May–October), vast herds descend to the Chobe River each morning and evening to drink, swim, and socialise. From a pontoon boat, you can drift within metres of these massive animals with no barrier between you.
Chobe pairs perfectly with the Okavango Delta for a complete Botswana experience, or with Victoria Fallsfor a quick 5-night southern Africa adventure. Kasane — the gateway town — is just 80 km from Victoria Falls.
Pontoon boat approaches elephant herds drinking at the river — hundreds of animals at close range. Hippos surface nearby, crocodiles bask. The most intimate wildlife experience in Africa.
Open-sided 4WD vehicles cover the Chobe riverfront and Savuti grasslands. Lion, leopard, cheetah, and wild dog are regularly seen in the dry season.
Sunset on the Chobe River with elephant silhouettes and enormous skies. Most lodges include this as part of the all-inclusive package — it's the defining Chobe image.
Available through private lodges in the Chobe Enclave or Linyanti areas (not in the main park). Guided on foot with an armed ranger — very different to vehicle-based viewing.
Tiger fishing on the Chobe River is a sport in itself. Catch-and-release trips available from Kasane. Tiger fish are aggressive fighters and a bucket-list angling target.
