Planning a Kenya safari

Kenya is where the safari industry largely began, and its road and air network still makes it one of the easier countries in which to combine several very different ecosystems in a short trip. The Masai Mara is the headline: the northern extension of the Serengeti ecosystem, where the migration herds cross the Mara River between roughly July and October and where the surrounding community conservancies allow night drives and walking that the reserve itself does not. Amboseli trades variety for one of the most photographed scenes in Africa, elephant herds beneath Kilimanjaro, while Laikipia in the central highlands has become the centre of Kenyan rhino conservation. The Rift Valley lakes — Nakuru, Naivasha, Bogoria — add flamingo and birdlife, and Tsavo's scale and red dust make a different kind of trip again. Most itineraries fly between them rather than drive.

Questions about Kenya tour operators

Compare a few. Look at the tours each one runs and their "from" prices, read guest reviews where there are some, and check whether they hold a SafariSync verification badge. Then ask two or three for a quote on the same trip — the itineraries and prices they send back are the best comparison.
