Rwanda · Virunga Massif
Trek through ancient Afromontane forest to sit with mountain gorillas — among only ~1,069 left on Earth.
Kigali International Airport has direct connections to major hubs — Amsterdam, Brussels, Dubai, Nairobi, Addis Ababa. Trailheads are just 2 hours from the airport: fly in, trek the next morning.
Rwanda limits daily trekkers per gorilla family to 8 and charges the highest permit fee on the continent. The result: a quieter, more intimate experience and direct conservation funding.
Volcanoes NP is where Dian Fossey conducted her landmark research and founded the Karisoke Research Center. You can visit Karisoke's remains and Fossey's grave on the Bisoke volcano trail.
Volcanoes also hosts habituated golden monkey families — a second primate encounter available for $100 per person. Pair with gorilla trekking for a full primate day.
Rwanda Development Board assigns trekking groups to families at morning briefing (6:00 AM). You cannot request a specific family, but your operator can note preferences.
| Family | Silverbacks | Members | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Susa A | 2 | 28 | Largest family; longest trek (4–8 hrs) |
| Amahoro | 1 | 18 | Known for peaceful temperament |
| Sabyinyo | 3 | 15 | Easiest trek; closest to park HQ |
| Agashya (Group 13) | 1 | 25 | Frequent meadow sightings |
| Kwitonda | 2 | 24 | Ex-DRC migrants; roam widely |
| Hirwa | 1 | 16 | Moderate trek difficulty |
| Umubano | 1 | 13 | Split from Amahoro in 2006 |
| Ugyenda | 1 | 10 | Frequent movers; unpredictable location |
| Pablo | 1 | 22 | Named after Dian Fossey's subject |
| Isimbi | 1 | 12 | Habituated 2019; fewer visitors |
| Igisha | 1 | 11 | Newer habituation; pristine forest |
| Karisimbi | 1 | 16 | High-altitude slopes |
You'll hike 1–8 hours on steep volcanic terrain at altitude. Train with hill walks 4–6 weeks before. Porters ($15–20 tip) carry bags and can physically support trekkers on steep sections — highly recommended.
Long-sleeved shirt, long trousers (tuck into socks — stinging nettles), waterproof jacket, sturdy ankle-support boots, and gardening gloves. Temperatures drop sharply in forest — layer up from car to trailhead.
Trailheads sit at ~2,400m; gorillas often found above 3,000m. Spend a night in Musanze (1,450m) or at a park lodge before trekking. Pace yourself — guides will adjust speed.
Do not visit if you have a cold, flu, or contagious illness — gorillas are susceptible to human respiratory disease. Minimum age is 15. Maintain 7m distance (guides enforce this). One hour maximum with gorillas.
No flash photography. Use ISO 1600–3200 in forest light. A 70–200mm lens covers most gorilla encounters. Leave the tripod — you'll move fast to keep up with the family.
Book through RDB (rdb.rw) or a licensed operator. Peak season (Jun–Sep) permits sell out 6–12 months ahead. If a permit falls through, operators often have connections to last-minute allocations.
| Period | Season | Trails | Visibility | Crowds | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jun–Sep | Peak Dry Season | Firm | Excellent | High | Best photography; book permits 6+ months ahead |
| Dec–Feb | Short Dry Season | Mostly dry | Very Good | Moderate | Good availability; pleasant temperatures |
| Oct–Nov | Short Rains | Muddy | Good | Low | Lush vegetation; lower lodge rates |
| Mar–May | Long Rains | Very muddy | Reduced | Lowest | Hardest trekking; budget permits still available |
Lodges cluster in Kinigi and along the volcano slopes — 20–45 minutes from park headquarters.

The 2023 census counted 1,069 mountain gorillas across the entire Virunga range (Rwanda, Uganda, DRC). It's one of very few great ape species whose population is increasing, thanks to coordinated conservation.
Rwanda is consistently rated among Africa's safest destinations — low crime, clean cities, stable government. Kigali is frequently cited as one of Africa's most liveable capitals.
Yes — very popular. Cross overland via the Cyanika border (45 min from Musanze) or fly Kigali–Entebbe. Combine with Queen Elizabeth NP for a Uganda–Rwanda 10-day circuit.
